Ryan Townsend first began his musical career as a drummer in elementary school. As an early teen he began to pursue the guitar and music studies more intensely, all while developing a strong interest for listening, playing, and performing. Over the years he has learned a number of different instruments, including the guitar, drums, piano, bass, banjo, mandolin, and violin and has developed a distinctive voice with a strong vocal range.
Townsend has been teaching music for nearly a decade. He first began to give music lessons in Franklin Square, NY, while completing a BFA in Arts Management at Long Island University. His passion for music, proficiency, and patience have yielded a long lasting career, which has encompassed hundreds of students. His knowledge of a variety of instruments have enabled him to teach a wide range of students and studies.
In addition to teaching, Townsend has had a successful career performing and recording his original music with different bands over the years. He has shared the stage with artists such as Donna Jean Godchaeux (Grateful Dead), Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Russell Batiste (Funky Meters, Vida Blue), Questlove (the Roots), Jimmy Herring (Widespread Panic).
Townsend first gained appreciation as an established songwriter when the song “High Street” received notice, placing in the finals of the 2008 Billboard Songwriting contest. His music has been featured in the Lionsgate feature film Living Will and on the Versus television network.
In 2012 he opened up R&R Music School with long time partner Ryan Marks. Townsend continues to teach, record, and perform in the New York metropolitan area.
